Thank you for bringing it home
Over 20,000 people to thank for 2009 record achievement
January 21, 2009: A sold out crowd of over 450 donors and volunteers chanted “Bring It On Home†as United Way of York Region (UWYR) announced a record $7,667,050 achievement for its 2009 campaign. The announcement, unveiled at the 2009 Campaign Celebration on Wednesday, January 20, represents a 2.9% increase over last year’s comparable achievement.
Court Carruthers, President of Grainger International and volunteer Chair of the 2009 Campaign Cabinet declares, “I have been involved with United Way as a volunteer for 5 years now, the last 2 as Chair of the Campaign Cabinet. In all my years, in all my volunteer efforts, I have never seen so many people work so hard for so long to raise so much. Every single volunteer and donor focused on a single goal: to ensure that people in need can access the services they need, when and where they need them. On behalf of the 2009 Campaign Cabinet, thank you.â€
UWYR CEO, Daniele Zanotti, says “On a sunny summer morning in King City, when we unveiled the 2009 goal of $7.65M, thousands of volunteers joined me chanting, “Bring It On Home.â€
Zanotti continues, “And 5 months later, thanks to over 20,000 volunteers and donors, did we ever bring it on home to York Region: for the unemployed dad in Maple, who, thanks to a United Way funded program, will be able to access employment support and find full time work again; for the teen in Georgina, who, thanks to a United Way funded program, will choose an after school program and not suicide; for the isolated senior in Aurora who, thanks to a United Way funded program, will now be able to get out, meet friends and continue living independently.â€
Mark Foerster, Chair of the UWYR 2009/2010 Board of Directors and Vice President Group Operations & Claims for Munich Reinsurance Company states, “Every year, no matter how daunting the task, York Region residents and businesses respond. This record achievement belongs to the over 20,000 people who showed how much they care by giving time or money to United Way. Thanks to each and every one of you, United Way can continue to invest in critical social programs across the region, building a better life for everyone.â€
United Way of York Region presented 27 local organizations with Spirit Awards for outstanding campaign accomplishments.
Sharon Johnson was named Volunteer of the Year and presented with the Douglas E. Lear Memorial Award. The award is sponsored by UWYR in association with Allstate Insurance Company of Canada. Significant increase in demand for United Way funded programs
There is still time to help as 2009 campaign enters final stretch
December 9, 2009: With only weeks left in the 2009 campaign, residents, employees and businesses have helped push United Way of York Region to 80%, just over $6.12M of the $7.65M goal for local programs.
“Thanks to every single dollar from every single donor, hitting our goal is in sight,†says Court Carruthers, 2009 Cabinet Chair and President, Grainger International. “But this last 20% will require all our drive, dedication and donations. We are asking residents to join us and help bring it home.â€
And according to a recent survey of United Way of York Region’s member agencies that deliver essential programs, the need for services has intensified over the last 12 months. In fact, the majority of United Way funded agencies in York Region have seen an increase in the demand for services in 2009. Primary reasons for the increase include changes in labour market conditions and changes in York Region’s population demographics, e.g. population growth.
States Daniele Zanotti, CEO, UWYR, “I am not surprised by the demand on our funded programs. In an economic climate like this, in a region with breathtaking growth and change like ours, we will continue to struggle with supply and demand.â€
Continues Zanotti, “What is surprising, for me, is the intensity and complexity of issues now appearing at the doorstep of United Way funded programs: a mature worker laid off from his job in the manufacturing sector showing signs of stress, anger and needing more time and help to get back into the workforce; a mom who, for the first time, now finds herself in need of food, clothing and support for her family due to either her own or her partner’s job loss; or a family new to the region seeking crisis support for their child struggling to fit in.â€
Adds Carruthers, “Please join us in these final weeks of our campaign to ensure services and supports are available close to home, in a year when so many more are asking for help.â€

With some road left in the 2009 Campaign, there is still a Way to help neighbours in need
United Way Campaign hits 56% to date thanks to partners like 407 ETR
strong>November 4, 2009: If Wednesday is hump day for the working week, then early November might be considered the mid-campaign hump for United Way of York Region.
In a warehouse at 407 ETR, surrounded by friends, trucks and salters, United Way announced that residents, employees and companies have pushed hard to take the 2009 campaign to 56% to date, or just over $4,300,000 confirmed to the $7.65 million goal for local programs and services.
And with a month and a half left to go, Hilda Gan, United Way of York Region Campaign Cabinet and Board member and Vice President of HDR | iTRANS, encouraged all to join together to ensure success.
“We have 44% left to go – $3,350,000 to raise. And we can. Everybody can make a difference, every gift has an impact,†said Gan. “Our co-workers, neighbours and families are counting on the programs and services United Way funds, especially this year.â€
Gan recognized 407 ETR, host of the event and a long time United Way supporter, for setting an aggressive 2009 goal, and beating it with a record achievement of $106,728.
Jose Tamariz, President & CEO, 407 ETR, stated, “407 ETR is committed to giving back to the community and setting a new donation record during tough economic times is a testament to the generousity of our employees. We are proud of our relationship with the United Way and commend them for the difference they make in the lives of one in three people in York Region.â€
Daniele Zanotti, CEO, United Way of York Region, praised the donors and volunteers that make up United Way. “Without dedicated and determined friends like 407 ETR, there would literally be no way. 56% to date is a testament to thousands of residents, employees and businesses working hard to build a better life for everyone.â€
Gan noted, “We still have a long way to go before we reach our goal, one that will ensure our community remains stable today and emerges stronger tomorrow. We really want York Region to know that we can do this with everyone’s help and participation. With you, there is a way.â€

Addressing our strengths will enhance quality of life for all in York Region
York Region residents identify opportunities in the midst of breathtaking growth and change
October 5, 2009: Earlier this morning, seated at picnic tables outside the State Farm Head Office in Aurora, residents, volunteers, community and corporate leaders joined United Way of York Region (UWYR) to share the findings of a year-long dialogue on the pace, face and places of growth across the region. The learnings are gathered in …addressing OUR STRENGTHS, the follow up to UWYR’s 2008 …if addressed. report.
“Last year, in an empty field in Richmond Hill, United Way released…if addressed. and started a discussion on the defining issue of our region: the intersection of pace of growth, the changing faces of growth, and the places where growth was occurring,†states Gerry Harrison, UWYR Board member and Chair of its Community Engagement and Research Committee. “This year, we have gathered in this scenic and symbolic location, overlooking the 404, commercial and residential buildings and farmland, to share the simple, clear and surprising findings of our discussions.â€
Daniele Zanotti, CEO, UWYR says, “Pace of growth is so often associated with increasing needs. But our meetings across the region turned that perception on its head. We heard stories of strength, opportunities and resilience. We heard that in addition to municipalities and neighbourhoods, we are ‘a region of communities in communities’, culture, faith, interests, perspectives. We heard that residents of York Region are proud of their overall quality of life. And we are all committed to enhance it in the years to come, not by focusing on our needs but by addressing our strengths.â€
UWYR’s findings from a region-wide Nielsen Company survey and community meetings across the municipalities identified the following as our region’s greatest strengths:
- helping our youth grow up strong
- enabling individuals and families to achieve economic independence
- improving the wellbeing of individuals and communities
Zanotti continues, “…addressing OUR STRENGTHS tells the story of York Region today and the region going forward in the midst of growth and change. It is the story of a caring, committed and strong region.â€
“This is why State Farm is proud of its new home in York Region and chooses to partner with United Way,†states Barbara Bellissimo, Senior Vice President, State Farm Canada, “Good neighbours help each other manage the risks of everyday life, recover from the unexpected and realize their dreams. York Region residents, United Way and State Farm believe that we can enrich quality of life for all by building on our strengths.â€
“The release of …addressing OUR STRENGTHS kicks off our second annual United Way Week, supported by the Region of York, all nine of our municipalities and both Boards of Education,†says Ian Proudfoot, Vice President and Regional Publisher, York Region Media Group and Chair of UWYR’s Community Campaign. “The week and the report are a call to action to every resident, business and community group to join us in building a better life for everyone.â€
United Way Week runs from October 5th through to October 10th and celebrates the 1 in 3 people touched by United Way, over 300,000 people whose lives have been positively changed by United Way’s network of 100 programs and 39 agencies.

United Way Sets Aggressive 2009 Goal to Meet Intensifying Local Needs
August 15, 2009: United Way of York Region (UWYR) has kicked off its annual campaign with a goal of raising a record $7,650,000 for local priorities and programs, a $200,000 (2.7%) increase over last year’s comparable achievement of $7,450,000.
“All the economic indicators suggest the 2009 goal is a stretch, but it is what is required to support the community in these difficult times. All the human need indicators across the region suggest it is a bare necessity,†said Court Carruthers, President of Acklands-Grainger Inc. and volunteer Chair of the 2009 Cabinet. “Especially in the face of our current economy, we must stretch to meet the intensifying local needs across York Region, families suddenly hit by job loss, tightening household budgets, increased stress.â€
Mark Foerster, Chair, United Way of York Region Board of Directors applauds Campaign Cabinet for their courage, “Our community and corporate leaders acknowledge that in times of greatest need, United Way of York Region must focus primary attention on raising funds for critical local priorities and programs. This year and going forward, the campaign goal will represent exclusively dollars raised that United Way can invest in local programs and member agencies, and not funds directed by donors to other charities and United Way’s across Canada.â€
Daniele Zanotti, CEO, United Way of York Region, states, “People who have never needed help before are turning to United Way funded programs, and we must ensure supports are available when and where they are needed. Everyone in York Region wins when, through United Way, a dad from Vaughan finds employment and housing stability for his family, a teenager from Aurora chooses counselling over suicide, a mom and her children from Georgina start a new life free of violence.â€
The 2009 Campaign was launched at the Toromont CAT Dragon Boat Festival in support of United Way of York Region on August 15th at Seneca College King Campus. A record 41 teams vied for the coveted Toromont CAT Cup, and raised $167,000.
David Wetherald, Vice President of Human Resources and Legal at Toromont CAT declared, “From our title sponsorship of the signature Dragon Boat event, to our workplace campaign, to our volunteer participation in Day of Caring, Toromont CAT is committed to giving back where our employees live and work. Toromont CAT is proud to partner with United Way in helping build a better life for everyone.â€
United Way of York Region supports 100 programs delivered by 39 member agencies in the Region focusing on five priority areas:
- Supporting those who have mental health challenges;
- Providing services for newcomers and immigrants;
- Preventing domestic violence and abuse;
- Addressing issues of affordable housing and homelessness; and
- Promoting literacy.
In 2008, United Way of York Region had $7,450,000 available for local allocation to agencies and program funding, plus operational expenses. The remaining $2,086,408 was distributed to other charities and United Ways across Canada as directed by donors. Thanks to over one thousand volunteers, UWYR’s fundraising and administrative expenses are only 17.5% of all donations, well below Canadian benchmarks for charities.

June 25th, 2009, Markham, ON: United Way of York Region’s (UWYR) 2009 record allocation to the community will go a long way to provide opportunities for a better life for everyone, especially in tough economic times, said United Way CEO Daniele Zanotti today.
At its Annual General Meeting at Le Parc in Concord, United Way of York Region Board Chair Mark Foerster, Vice President, Munich Reinsurance Company, said that the 2009 funding to the community will provide stability to a critical network of health and social service agencies across the region’s nine municipalities at a time when they need it most.
“Thank you for showing that in times of uncertainty and need, one thing is certain – your remarkable resolve and caring,†said Foerster to a crowd of 120 corporate and community leaders. “Thanks to you, a recently unemployed dad will get help finding a new career, a teen struggling with depression will have someone to talk to, an isolated senior will connect with new supports.â€

- $2.1 million distributed to other United Ways and charities, as directed by our donors
Zanotti and Foerster highlighted UWYR’s achievements in 2008 and revealed 2009 initiatives, including the fall release of what is being called ‘our most evocative report to date’, a follow up to 2008’s provocative …if addressed.
This year’s keynote speaker, Carol Wilding, President and CEO, Toronto Board of Trade, spoke to the recently released report, Toronto as a Global City: Scorecard on Prosperity. Wilding, a York Region resident, underlined that the cornerstone of building a better life for everyone is a greater Toronto economic region.

Spirit of compassion and generosity drives record achievement
Friday, January 30, 2009 – York Region ON: A sold out crowd of donors and volunteers burst into applause as United Way of York Region (UWYR) announced a record $9,537,000 achievement for its 2008 campaign. The announcement, unveiled at the 2008 Campaign Celebration on Thursday, January 29th, represents a 5.9% increase over last year’s achievement.
Court Carruthers, President of Acklands-Grainger and volunteer Chair of the 2008 Campaign Cabinet declares, “This is a testament to the resolve of our volunteers and donors. We set an aggressive goal of $9.5 million in August, and then a global economic storm hit. But every single volunteer on the cabinet and the hundreds of volunteers in our accounts were determined to meet that goal to ensure that people in need can access the services they need. On behalf of the 2008 Cabinet, thank you.â€
UWYR CEO, Daniele Zanotti, says “Simple, powerful and affirming. People want to help. People want to be sure their help is making a difference. People want to be part of a greater good. And in times when we will all need each other even more, residents, employees and companies across York Region gave even more.â€
Zanotti highlights, “The record achievement is really the sub-heading. The headline – the real story – is York Region’s spirit of generosity and its impact on people in our neighbourhoods. On behalf of the father in Maple now able to access employment support after being laid off, the family in Markham now able to manage the depths of their daughter’s depression, the senior in Aurora now able to live independently, thank you.â€
Mark Foerster, Chair of the UWYR 2008/2009 Board of Directors and Vice President Group Operations & Claims for Munich Reinsurance Company states, “There is a feeling of community spirit and optimism in this remarkable achievement. York Region’s compassion delivers hope to the 1 in 3 residents who rely on United Way funded programs. On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you, to our volunteers, donors, corporate and community leaders and staff.â€
United Way of York Region presented 25 local organizations with Spirit Awards for outstanding campaign accomplishments.
John McLean was named Volunteer of the Year and presented with the Douglas E. Lear Award. The award is sponsored by UWYR in association with Allstate Insurance Company of Canada. A strong advocate for literacy skills enhancement, Mr. McLean has served and worked to improve the community for more than 24 years and sits as Past-President on the Board of Directors for the Learning Centre for Georgina as well as Jericho Youth Services, both United Way member agencies.

RESIDENTS, EMPLOYEES AND CORPORATIONS ARE ‘GETTING THEIR UNITED WAY ON’
November 19, 2008
Despite success of campaigns, United Way needs help to reach this year’s goal.
Markham, ON: A mid-campaign analysis reveals that in the face of economic uncertainty, residents, employees and corporations are trying harder, digging deeper and giving more to lend a helping hand to those in need across York Region.
At noon today, United Way of York Region held a media conference at Motorola’s National United Way Campaign kick off to reveal their mid-campaign results. To date, the 2008 United Way of York Region campaign has raised 63% of the organization’s $9.5 million goal.
“The story today is not $9.5M or our march towards it. The real story is the resolve and enthusiasm we’ve seen so far from long-time and new friends of United Way of York Region. The real story is that in unprecedented economic times, we are most remarkable, together.†reveals UWYR CEO, Daniele Zanotti.
Mike Hortie, Immediate Past Chair of the UWYR Campaign Cabinet and President of Motorola Canada Limited states, “The excitement we’re witnessing here today at Motorola is just one example of how United Way of York Region supporters are really rallying behind them to ensure anyone in our region who needs help will be able to get help. The enthusiasm is overwhelming. There is no doubt that everybody is ‘Getting Their United Way On’!â€
Indeed, the threat of economic uncertainty seems to have fuelled those who have donated before, along with companies and individuals who feel this is the best time to start giving.
Darlene Crofton of Canada Post is a true leader in her workplace campaign. Darlene, along with many of her colleagues are working tirelessly to ensure the campaign is a success. Darlene is passionate about United Way of York Region, as her granddaughter was born with many challenges and, without the support of United Way funded programs, would not have received the support needed for her family to cope. Understanding Darlene’s passion and the importance of UWYR to the community, Canada Post has released Darlene from her responsibilities for four months so she can act as a team canvasser for United Way of York Region.
Dave Saunders, President of LEA Consulting, decided that this year, with so many companies suffering cut-backs and lay-offs occurring in a number of sectors, a United Way campaign was the best way to help support the community. Mr. Saunders held his first employee campaign, a highly successful one.
With the economic crisis acting as a catalyst, long-time supporter and MMM Group Partner, Bob Koziol, put together a large committee and ran an energetic and remarkable campaign. Overall, MMM Group surpassed last year’s campaign total by $12,000, an impressive 18% increase.
AMEX knows first-hand what it’s like to experience corporate hardship. Yet AMEX also experienced a dramatic increase in their campaign total this year. Denise Pickett, President and CEO, states, “I am humbled by the generosity of our employees during a challenging time for the company. It does show again, AMEX cares.â€
Volunteer Chair of the 2008 United Way Campaign Cabinet and President of Acklands-Grainger Inc., Court Carruthers, states, “We have been celebrating some remarkable campaign results this fall. Today alone, we’ve heard inspiring campaign success stories that bring us hope for a strong finish. However, we must keep in mind that good news typically comes in early. Now, at the mid-campaign point, we need to keep the level of enthusiasm high. The last two months of the campaign are critical to ensuring that we raise the funds necessary to address the social service needs of our growing region.â€
Funds raised during the campaign are channeled to United Way of York Region’s Community Fund. Through 40 member agencies operating close to 100 critical programs throughout the region, the Community Fund focuses spending on five priority areas:
- Supporting those who have mental health challenges
- Providing services for newcomers and immigrants
- Addressing domestic violence and abuse
- Tackling issues of affordable housing and homelessness
- Promoting literacy

RELEASE OF PROVOCATIVE REPORT KICKS OFF UNITED WAY WEEK
September 29, 2008
“… if addressed†certain to inspire community dialogue on the pace, face and place of growth within York Region.
September 29, 2008, Markham, ON: Earlier this morning, in the centre of an open field at the intersection of Yonge Street and Highway 7, a gathering of residents, volunteers and community leaders joined the United Way of York Region (UWYR) as it released a report that will engage the community to work together to address the single largest issue facing the region.
The location, now a vast, empty tract of land, is slated to be transformed into a series of high-rise office buildings, apartments and condominiums within the next 10 years.
The report, entitled ‘… if addressed’ raises some highly compelling questions about the needs that most certainly will arise as the pace and face of growth intersect in specific communities within York Region. Juxtaposed against a Social Planning Council report from 1979 entitled “Metro Suburbs in Transitionâ€, the report underscores some striking similarities between what were known then as Toronto’s suburbs and York Region today. ‘… if addressed’ sets the context for more defined initiatives and will open opportunities for the community to get involved, share insight and work together on this complex regional issue.
“The single defining issue facing York Region is not pace of growth alone.†states United Way of York Region CEO Daniele Zanotti. “Nor is it the changing face of growth or the places where this growth will occur. United Way of York Region is leading a community-wide dialogue on the intersection of pace of growth and face of growth in specific places. We have an amazing opportunity in York Region to work together with residents to put programs into place in neighbourhoods as the growth is happening. Recreation programs for youth, help for families in crisis, support for newcomers, and outreach programs for seniors. We must invest with strategic precision in the places where the pace of growth and face of growth intersect.â€
United Way of York Region has already begun conducting research to determine the points of intersection of pace, face and places of growth. This information will help to shape future programs, but more input will be needed. “We’ll want to hear from the people living in our neighbourhoods,†states Gerry Harrison, Board Director for United Way of York Region. “Over the upcoming year, we are listening to their stories, their realties and their challenges. United Way of York Region is committed to leading by listening, engaging residents, shaping priorities and acting to improve quality of life for all residents.â€
“This report could not have come out at a better time,†says Ian Proudfoot, Vice President & Regional Publisher, York Region Media Group and Chair of the United Way of York Region Community Campaign. “Municipalities throughout the region have declared United Way Week, along with both Boards of Education and Pickering College. This declaration is actually an invitation, to every member of the community, to get involved through United Way. What a wonderful opportunity to begin dialogue right away on how we would like to shape our neighbourhoods in the years to come.â€
United Way week runs from September 29th through to October 4th and celebrates the organization that currently supports 40 member agencies operating close to 100 vital programs throughout the region.
- October 2nd - United Way of York Region holds its 16th Day of Caring®, linking corporate volunteers to not-for-profit agencies that need help with projects ranging from preparing meals to painting and yard work.
- October 3rd - In partnership with the Alliance to End Homelessness and sponsored by the United Way of York Region, The Varley Art Gallery of Markham will host a thought-provoking exhibit entitled “Hidden in Plain Sight, Living Homeless in York Regionâ€.
- October 4th – Sponsored by the United Way of York Region, the Chinese Social Services Network will be host to the Living in York Region Social Service Exhibition at Market Village Mall. The exhibition will be a venue for informing the Chinese community about services available throughout York Region.

REGION’S RAPID GROWTH DRIVES UNITED WAY 2008 COMMUNITY GOAL
August 18, 2008
Corporate Volunteers Inspired by Impact Every Donation Makes.
August 18, 2008: Markham, ON: York Region’s rapid growth is the drive behind United Way of York Region’s aggressive 2008 community goal of $9.5 million, a 5.5% increase over last year’s record achievement.
Court Carruthers, President of Acklands Grainger Inc. and volunteer Chair of the 2008 Campaign Cabinet, states that, “For the last six months, our volunteer Cabinet of 22 business leaders from the region’s leading companies have met at United Way funded programs across the region: a classroom at the Welcome Centre in Vaughan, to a Markham drop-in program for homeless youth. We have seen the impact every donation to United Way of York Region makes. We have analyzed the statistics of unprecedented growth in municipalities across York Region. We are committed to keeping our region vital with a strong social service network … for all residents.â€
Cabinet Vice Chair, Ian Proudfoot, Publisher, York Region Media Group, observes that “The United Way campaign is like no other. No other annual drive inspires thousands of volunteers and tens of thousands of donors across our sprawling region, connecting residents, industry leaders, and people on the front line in a common cause. No other annual drive shows, so visibly and intensely, what York Region residents already know. We are remarkable – together.â€
UWYR CEO Daniele Zanotti affirms “For every person involved in reaching this $9.5 million target, the goal is something more than a number. It’s counselling for a family in crisis. It’s employment training for a laid-off father. It’s a day program for a son with developmental and intellectual challenges or food and shelter for a newcomer family unable to make ends meet. Our commitment to raise more each year is always and only to ensure that we are able to invest more in local services and keep apace with the rapid growth and constantly changing face of our communities.â€
In 2007, UWYR distributed nearly $6.6 million to charitable organizations, with a record $5 million invested in close to 100 vital community programs addressing local priorities. The remainder was distributed to United Ways in other communities and other charities as directed by individual donors. UWYR’s cost effectiveness ensures that 83 cents of every dollar is invested directly into programs, a much improved ratio over the standard Canadian benchmark of 74 cents per dollar.
United Way of York Region focuses resources where the need is highest and will have the greatest impact. They fund programs offered through member agencies targeting the region’s five identified priority issues: helping people struggling with mental health problems; providing services for newcomers and immigrants; giving safe refuge and healing to victims of abuse; helping address issues of affordable housing and homelessness; and promoting literacy through training and support.
The 2008 Campaign was launched at the Toromont CAT Dragon Boat Festival in support of United Way of York Region on August 16th at Seneca College King Campus. A record 39 teams vied for the coveted Toromont CAT Cup, and raised $166,000, a 50% increase over last year.
David Wetherald, Vice President of Human Resources and Legal at Toromont CAT declared “What a remarkable way to kick off this region-wide campaign. We are honoured to be here today and thankful that we are able to support an organization that makes our communities a better place for all of us.â€

January 31, 2008
York Region ON: A record-high United Way campaign is good news for social services in York Region. United Way of York Region (UWYR) announced it raised $9,004,321 during its 2007 campaign.
Michael Hortie, President of Motorola Canada, and volunteer Chair of the 2007 Campaign Cabinet says, “I am thrilled to say we exceeded a very bold $9 million fundraising goal this year. From the outset, we were determined to do our absolute best to make sure people in need have an opportunity to access services close to home.â€
UWYR CEO Daniele Zanotti says “We put some serious social realities on the table this year, putting a face on priorities like mental health, domestic violence and poverty. We’ve also shown how stretched our social service network is across a sprawling region. Our volunteers, donors and residents across York Region heard the message and responded. This achievement will increase our investment in neighbourhood services.â€
Mr. Hortie says, “We all have reason to be proud of York Region’s geographic, economic and demographic diversity. But across the Region’s nine thriving municipalities there are some harsh realities; families are turned away from overcrowded emergency shelters; children who need mental health support are put on waiting lists; and, issues facing the working poor continue to mount.â€
United Way of York Region supports a network of 40 agencies, funding 100 vital social service programs. The UWYR Community Fund focuses on five priority areas:
- Supporting those who have mental health challenges
- Providing services for newcomers and immigrants
- Addressing domestic violence and abuse
- Tackling issues of affordable housing and homelessness
- Promoting literacy

905 GROWTH DRIVES UWYR $9 MILLION GOAL
November 2, 2007
Markham, ON: A mid-campaign analysis shows United Way of York Region (UWYR) is on track to its bold 2007 goal. Corporate leaders spearheading the campaign remain driven by 905 growth and social needs.
At the midway point, the 2007 United Way of York Region campaign has raised $4,092,000 representing 45% of the organization’s $9 million goal.
The volunteer Chair of the United Way Campaign Cabinet says population growth is the single driving push behind this year’s campaign. Mike Hortie, President of Motorola Canada, says, “As business leaders, we understand supply and demand. The truth is, supply of social service supports in York Region is shockingly below demand. That is unacceptable.
Mr. Hortie says, “We have been celebrating some remarkable campaign results this fall. However, we recognize good news typically comes in early. Now, at the mid-campaign point, we must remain focused on the need for social services in neighbourhoods across York Region. The last two months of the campaign are critical, we cannot leave any money on the table.
UWYR CEO Daniele Zanotti says, “Our corporate leaders understand the huge gap between needs and services in York Region. They have seen the value of a strong network of social service agencies close to where you live. The final push in our march to $9 million is important only as a means to that end.
Mr. Zanotti says, “In neighbourhoods as remarkable as ours, social service needs are not that obvious. It is understandable that people who are struggling tend to camouflage their situation. It is our responsibility to give voice to the people we serve and the needs they face.
A recent PricewaterhouseCoopers audit shows a long-standing and significant gap in government funding for social services programs in York Region and other GTA/905 communities. The report says the gap is getting wider as population growth continues to outstrip funding.
It is vital that York Region’s social service infrastructure meets today’s needs, or we face the threat of our neighbourhoods becoming overwhelmed in the future.
United Way of York Region’s Community Fund focuses on five priority areas:
- Supporting those who have mental health challenges
- Providing services for newcomers and immigrants
- Preventing domestic violence and abuse

DONATIONS AT WORK IN REMARKABLE YORK REGION NEIGHBOURHOODS
September 12, 2007
Vaughan, ON: September 12, 2007 – United Way of York Region (UWYR) is investing $290,000 to expand important social service programs in York Region neighbourhoods. The new funding addresses key areas of impact, including counselling services for individuals, families, youth and newcomers. It also provides funding for emergency programs to help homeless families and people in crisis.
Chair of the UWYR Fund Distribution Committee, Rick McHale says, “Thanks to United Way donors, we are extremely pleased to announce the addition of one new Member Agency. This brings the total to 40 local agencies receiving annual UWYR funding. Additionally, today’s funding announcement allows 8 existing member agencies to expand important services throughout York Region’s ever growing and changing neighbourhoods. Rapid population growth and changing demographics put increased pressure on social service agencies. This funding will make a remarkable impact in the lives of people in need.?
UWYR launched its 2007 fundraising campaign last month, setting its sight on more neighbourhood services across the region with the announcement of a bold $9 million goal. UWYR CEO Daniele Zanotti says today’s announcement reinforces the importance of that goal, “$9 million is not just a fundraising goal. $9 million is a stronger local network of services across a sprawling York Region, directly impacting the lives of people in your own neighbourhood. United Way of York Region means different things to different people.?
“United Way is a place to sleep and employment support for a family dealing with unemployment and high housing prices. United Way is safe refuge and hope for a woman and her children afraid to escape an abusive husband. United Way is counselling and ongoing support to a teenager whose life is spiralling out of control. United Way is immediate crisis counselling to a man who has just been told the mother of his children has been killed in a highway accident. To a donor, United Way is an efficient way to make a real difference in the lives of people in need.?
Victim Services of York Region is one of the member agencies to benefit from today’s announcement. York Regional Police Inspector Paul Pedersen applauds the approval of $43,000 in additional funding allowing Victim Services of York Region to expand its Crisis Intervention program.
Inspector Pedersen says, “Victim Services provides an invaluable service to people who are victimized by crime or tragic circumstances. Whether it is a case of domestic violence, a fatal motor vehicle accident, or an industrial mishap, the immediate counselling and support provided by Victim Services is critical. Last year, Victim Services of York Region helped 4,967 clients. That would not have been possible without the generous support provided by United Way donors.?
Mr. Zanotti says, “Support from United Way donors is at work in neighbourhoods throughout York Region, directly impacting lives. One donation to United Way is an uncomplicated way to make a remarkable impact on complicated social issues in your neighbourhood. With one donation to our Community Fund you help 40 agencies deliver nearly 100 services in 9 municipalities across the Region. That is remarkable impact.?
The UWYR Community Fund directs funding to five priority areas:
- Supporting those who have mental health challenges
- Providing services for newcomers and immigrants
- Preventing domestic violence and abuse
- Addressing issues of affordable housing and homelessness
- Promoting literacy
UNITED WAY SETS SIGHT ON NEIGHBOURHOOD SERVICES WITH BOLD 2007 GOAL
August 20, 2007
Markham, ON: August 20, 2007, Markham, ON: United Way of York Region moves to strengthen the local social service network in York Region with the launch of its 2007 fundraising campaign. United Way is driving to break the $9 million barrier, a $1 million increase over last year’s target.
Michael Hortie, President of Motorola Canada, and volunteer Chair of the 2007 Campaign Cabinet says, “A $1 million jump may seem aggressive, but our volunteer Campaign Cabinet has seen the impact of United Way across neighbourhoods in York Region. That is why we are committed to a $9 million goal for 2007.?
UWYR CEO Daniele Zanotti applauds the aggressive growth strategy saying, “Our volunteers are inspired by the difference $9 million will make in our neighbourhoods.?
The campaign was launched at the 4th Annual AMD Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday, August 18th at Seneca College King Campus. 33 teams registered for this year’s event, raising $111,000, a 6% increase over last year.
Mr. Hortie says, “It was another remarkable year for the AMD Dragon Boat Festival. There was strong competition on the water and just as importantly, the community spirit and enthusiastic fundraising made the event a great success. It’s a very fitting way to launch our 2007 campaign.?
Proceeds raised through the campaign fund a wide range of programs to assist people in need. Mr. Zanotti says, “For the mom and children who tried to escape abuse at home but could not find safe refuge in York Region because our two shelters were full, for the father who struggles with depression and is working hard to save his job and keep his family together, for the immigrant family that needs some help adapting to a new country and new culture, United Way of York Region is absolutely committed to a strong network of neighbourhood services to meet local priorities.?
Rapid population growth, an aging demographic, increased cultural and ethnic diversity, and a significant number of commuters, have become the norm in York Region. It is vital that the social service infrastructure respond accordingly.
In 2006 UWYR distributed nearly $6.5 million to charitable organizations. The majority of the money, $4.58 million, stays in York Region funding nearly 100 social service programs delivered by 39 local agencies. The remainder is distributed to United Ways in other communities and other registered Canadian charities as directed by individual donors. UWYR’s cost effectiveness is reflected in its 16% cost ratio which is much lower than the well recognized Canadian charitable benchmark of 26%.
United Way of York Region’s Community Fund focuses on five priority areas in York Region:
- Supporting those who have mental health challenges
- Providing services for newcomers and immigrants
- Preventing domestic violence and abuse
- Addressing issues of affordable housing and homelessness
- Promoting literacy

For the second consecutive year, the Honourable Dalton McGuinty, Premier of Ontario, was the Key Note Speaker at the luncheon, organized by Alfredo De Gasperis, President, Metrus Development Inc. and other leaders in the building industry. In its 25 year history the event has raised over $3.9 million to help people in need in York Region neighbourhoods.
Mr. De Gasperis was presented with the inaugural United Way of York Region Cornerstone in recognition of his steadfast leadership over the past 25 years. UWYR’s Board of Directors established the Cornerstone to recognize individuals and corporations whose long standing support through personal, corporate and in-kind gifts contribute significantly to the UWYR Community Fund.
UWYR Board Chair John Rogers says, “It is fitting that Mr. De Gasperis is the first recipient of the United Way Cornerstone. His personal support, and willingness to unite people and resources to improve our communities is remarkable.?
UWYR CEO Daniele Zanotti says, “We are inspired by Mr. De Gasperis and his colleagues in the building industry. The pace at which York Region is growing and changing is well documented. From a United Way perspective, the pressing issue is the face of that growth, the people who are impacted by the growth. The money raised at the Building Industry Luncheon has created immeasurable opportunities for people in need in York Region neighbourhoods. It is very significant that the event, celebrating its 25th anniversary, saw a 30% increase in donations this year. We are very appreciative of the incredible support for our Community Fund.?
UWYR’s Community Fund supports nearly 100 important social programs, delivered by 39 member agencies throughout York Region’s 9 municipalities. Funds are directed to 5 priority areas:
- Supporting those who have mental health challenges

United Way Donors Support Neighbourhood Programs
April 24, 2007
Markham, ON: United Way of York Region (UWYR) has proudly announced it is distributing nearly $6.5 million to charitable organizations. The majority of the money will fund social programs in York Region.
UWYR Board Chair John Rogers said, “People who supported our fundraising campaign last year are making a tremendous difference in York Region neighbourhoods. This is a significant infusion that will benefit many people from all walks of life throughout the year.?
The UWYR Board of Directors has allocated $4.58 million in funding from the UWYR Community Fund to the organization’s 39 member agencies throughout York Region. The UWYR Community Fund focuses on five priority areas:
- Addressing issues of affordable housing and homelessness
- Preventing domestic violence and abuse
- Promoting literacy
- Supporting those who have mental health challenges
- Providing services for newcomers and immigrants
In addition, $1.9 million will be distributed to United Ways in other communities and other registered Canadian charities as directed by individual donors. The 2006 UWYR campaign raised a record $8.55 million. The organization’s fundraising and administration costs are 16%, well below the recognized Canadian benchmark of 26%.
Funding decisions are based on rigorous due diligence conducted by a Citizen Review Panel. The panel is comprised of trained community volunteers who assess applications against established funding criteria.
Rick McHale, UWYR Board member and Chair of the Fund Distribution Committee said, “I thank the 42 people who sat on the Citizen Review Panel this year. Their work is a vital part of the United Way fund distribution system. United Way donors can be satisfied that their support is invested in solid programs that improve lives for people in York Region.?
The majority of the $4.5 million for United Way of York Region member agencies will fund a continuation of the close to 100 social programs currently funded by UWYR. $240,000 in grant funding will be made available to help member agencies build infrastructure, begin new programs or expand their existing programs. $50,000 has been earmarked to provide funding to a new member agency this year.
UWYR CEO Daniele Zanotti said, “Much is said about the pace of growth in York Region. For United Way, the more specific issue is the face of the pace of growth in York Region. Our population increases by 40,000 every year. The richness of our cultural diversity is reflected in the fact that 65 languages are spoken in York Region households. Those are extremely compelling statistics. United Way of York Region looks behind the numbers to monitor the social impact these trends have on our neighbourhoods. United Way donors can rest assured their support is targeted at pressing issues. There is great power in people coming together for the common good. Donors, volunteers, and the dedicated people who deliver United Way funded programs combine in a winning formula. That is the power of United Way of York Region.?
United Way of York Region announced its 2007 / 2008 distribution of campaign proceeds at the site of a unique adult employment program operated by Job Skills, a United Way of York Region member agency.
United Way of York Region Announces New CEO
February 20, 2007
Markham, ON: The Board of Directors of United Way of York Region (UWYR) is pleased to announce the appointment of its new Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Daniele Zanotti assumes the position on March 12, 2007.
With an extensive background in social work and fundraising, Mr. Zanotti is widely recognized for his inspirational and strategic business approach. He has a keen understanding of the social fabric of York Region and brings valuable experience in the private, public, and not-for-profit sectors. Mr. Zanotti also has an in-depth understanding of United Way of York Region, having previously held senior management positions in fundraising and fund distribution.
In announcing Mr. Zanotti’s appointment, UWYR Board Chair John Rogers, CAO, Town of Aurora, said, “We are extremely pleased to welcome Daniele back to United Way. Our organization has consistently set new fundraising records and distributed those funds to address pressing needs in our communities. Daniele’s skills, experience and passion for York Region will drive our organization to even greater heights.?
Mr. Zanotti said, “This is a homecoming of sorts for me. York Region is home for me and my family, and United Way of York Region is an organization I passionately believe in. As a staff member, and then a volunteer, I have gained a great respect for this organization’s mission and vision. I am honoured to have the opportunity to return. With dedicated volunteers and a strong staff compliment, United Way of York Region is well positioned to meet the challenges before us with confidence and determination.?
Mr. Rogers said, “The human services sector in York Region is under increasing pressure. A burgeoning population and shifting demographics make it increasingly difficult for human care agencies to meet demand for programs. United Way’s ability to raise funds and distribute the money where it is needed most is vital. But our role goes beyond increasing annual funding. United Way also works diligently to address the larger societal issues threatening the wellbeing of York Region communities. Daniele’s expertise, experience and exuberance will be a positive force in our sector.?
Mr. Zanotti said, “This is an exciting time to live and work in York Region. Certainly, our remarkable growth creates challenges that must be addressed. But when I meet the families who call York Region home, when I see the faces of the people who live in our unique neighbourhoods, I see opportunity. There is great power in people coming together for the common good, and that is the power of United Way of York Region.?
United Way of York Region’s 2006 campaign raised a record $8.55 million, a 12% increase over the previous year. An announcement detailing how the money will be distributed will be made in mid-April.

Over 350 supporters gathered at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham for the 2006 Campaign Celebration Achievement Dinner on Thursday, January 25.
Volunteer Campaign Cabinet Chair David Barnes, Vice President, Advertising, Sponsorship and Communications, American Express, said, “This has been an incredible year for United Way of York Region thanks to our extremely dedicated volunteers and generous donors. We have cultivated strong relationships with all levels of government, business, labour, industry, community groups and residents.?
The 2006 campaign results reflect an impressive 46% growth over four years. Mr. Bhardwaj said, “I believe the growth is an indication that York Region residents are gaining a real understanding of the issues our communities face and the solutions that United Way provides. Agencies providing human service programs are under constant pressure to meet growing demands for services. Population growth and changing demographics make their job extremely challenging.?
Amex Canada and its employees organized a record setting campaign in 2006, raising over $560,000. Mr. Barnes noted that this is the first campaign in United Way of York Region history to surpass the half million dollar mark. Mr. Barnes said, “I have been extremely pleased to serve as Chair of the United Way Campaign Cabinet for the past two years, and it is personally rewarding to see my company and my colleagues set an outstanding campaign achievement.?

We are very sorry to see Rahul move on, but he has built a strong team and a solid platform to enable us to continue our work in uniting people and resources to improve the quality of life in York Region.?

In Pursuit of a New Record: United Way of York Region announces ambitious
2006 Campaign Goal
August 19, 2006
Markham, ON: United Way of York Region (UWYR) has set its
sights on another fundraising record, announcing an ambitious $8 million goal
for the 2006 campaign.
United Way of York Region CEO Rahul Bhardwaj said, "We broke through the $7 million
mark last year and are confident that we can hit $8 million this year."
Volunteer Campaign Cabinet Chair David Barnes, Vice President of Advertising,
Sponsorship & Communication, Amex Canada Inc., said, "York Region residents are
rapidly becoming aware of the human service needs that exist in our communities. It
still surprises some people that 72,000 people in York Region live under the low income
cut off. If all of those people lived in one community, it would be York Region’s fourth
largest municipality, equivalent to the size of Newmarket!"
Social need in York Region is fueled by a number of factors including population growth
and changing demographics: York Region’s population grows by an estimated 40,000
per year; urban planners project a 400% increase in seniors by 2026; and increasing
diversity creates cultural and language issues that must be addressed.
Mr. Bhardwaj said, "Ignoring change leads to isolation, marginalization and ultimately
social upheaval. We watch as big cities struggle with problems such as poverty stricken
neighbourhoods, disenfranchised youth, disconnected families and street violence.
There is no invisible barrier to prevent those issues from taking root in York Region. We
all have to do our part to strengthen our communities".
The record setting 2006 Campaign Goal was announced at the 3rd Annual ATI
Technologies Inc. Dragon Boat Festival in support of United Way of York Region,
August 19, 2006. The event raised $105,000, a 35% increase over last year.
Special thank you to the Corporate Sponsors:

programs. Funds are directed to five priority areas:

- Literacy;
- Mental Health; and

Mr. Barnes said, "I am very proud to be involved with United Way of York Region. We
all know how challenging life can become at times. When those challenges become
overwhelming, United Way and its member agencies are there to help."

Building Industry Sets New Record
May 29, 2006
Markham, ON: The 24th Annual Building Industry Luncheon attracted 1,000 people, raising a record $420,000 for United Way of York Region.
The Honourable Dalton McGuinty, Premier of Ontario, was the Key Note Speaker.
In its 24 year history the luncheon, organized by Alfredo De Gasperis, President, Metrus Developments and other leaders in the building industry, has raised over $3.4 Million. Rahul Bhardwaj, UWYR CEO said, “We are heartened by the generosity shown by Fred De Gasperis and his colleagues in the building industry sector. Their financial support makes a tremendous impact in York Region communities.”
UWYR funds over 100 critical programs, funding 37 agencies throughout York Region. Funds are directed to five priority areas:
- Affordable housing and homelessness
- Domestic violence and abuse
- Literacy
- Mental Health
- Newcomers and Immigrants
York Region’s building industry is an important economic driver, providing jobs, homes and infrastructure to one of Canada’s fastest growing communities. Along with rapid population growth is an increased need for social programs, putting increased pressure on already over-stretched human care agencies.
Mr. Bhardwaj said, “The Building Industry Luncheon is a very important part of our annual fundraising efforts. We are very appreciative of the efforts of all those involved. We hope this event sets the pace for our campaign in the coming months.”

United Way Campaign a Record Breaker
January 26, 2006
Markham, ON: United Way of York Region (UWYR) is celebrating a record $7.65 million campaign. The 2005 campaign total surpasses the previous year’s campaign by 13%.
Volunteer Campaign Cabinet Chair David Barnes, Vice President of Public Affairs and Communications, Amex Canada Inc., said, “I am amazed and grateful. We wanted to break through the important psychological benchmark of $7 million. We set our sights on $7.25 million. Surpassing that goal is a testament to the caring and generous people of York Region. I thank business, labour, government, employee groups and individuals for all getting behind the 2005 campaign.”
Rahul Bhardwaj, UWYR CEO believes the key to success in 2005 was an improved understanding of human care needs in York Region. “United Way is well known, but not always known well. The 2005 strategy was to build relationships and awareness. We were confident that donors would respond generously once they understood just how great the need is in York Region, and the important role United Way plays in addressing that need.”
The UWYR campaign has shown steady growth over the past number of years, but even so, demand for services has outpaced available resources. Population growth and changing demographics are making it increasingly difficult for human care organizations to keep up with demand.
Mr. Bhardwaj said, “Social need is somewhat camouflaged in York Region, but there is no doubt we have ‘big city’ problems to deal with. The experience of large urban centres has shown us how quickly these problems can overtake a community. The human services sector is challenged to respond to needs associated with an aging population, struggling youth and increasing cultural diversity.”
The announcement was made on Thursday, January 26, as approximately 400 supporters gathered at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham for the 2005 Campaign Celebration Achievement Dinner. Spirit Awards were presented to the top corporate and employee campaigns. For Further Information Contact: Bernie Sutton Robertson, Director of Marketing 905.474.9974 ext 231 or bsrobertson@uwyr.on.ca.
Mr. Bhardwaj also announced that Mr. Barnes will serve as Campaign Cabinet Chair in 2006. Mr. Barnes is particularly proud of the support shown by his company and colleagues. Amex Canada Inc. was presented with a Quantum Leap Award for an outstanding increase in corporate and employee giving in the 2005 campaign.

December 19, 2005
Markham, ON: The United Way of York Region (UWYR) campaign has raised $5.5 million to date, representing 75% of the 2005 goal.
Rahul Bhardwaj, UWYR CEO said, “We are working very hard to raise $7.25 million for human care needs in York Region. At this time of year, there is heightened awareness of the needs that exist in our communities. The truth is, these needs exist all year long. Families are in crisis all year long. Waiting lists for critical programs exist all year long. Vital services cannot keep pace with growing need. It is important to address these issues twelve months a year and a donation to United Way of York Region is a really efficient way for donors to help out.”
The majority of United Way funding is raised through workplace campaigns organized by companies and their employees throughout York Region. People who are not involved in employee campaigns are typically canvassed through the mail.
Mr. Bhardwaj said, “It certainly isn’t too late to get involved. If you haven’t received a United Way pledge form yet, just give our office a call. We can mail one out to you or help you get tied in with an employee campaign.”
Shari Lovelock, Director of Development said, “Many donors are opting to spread their donation out over twelve months rather than feeling the pinch with one single donation. Payroll deduction plans are really popular and a growing number of people are making their contributions with preauthorized payments through their credit cards or bank accounts.”
Mr. Bhardwaj said, “This has been a very vigorous campaign. When we kicked this campaign off in the fall, improving public awareness was our big challenge. Over the past four months, scores of volunteers have worked diligently to help people understand the life challenges many of their friends and neighbours are faced with every day, and the role United Way plays in strengthening communities.”

United Way and Enbridge Gas Distribution
Launch 2005, 2006 Winter Warmth Fund
December 6, 2005
December 6, 2005, United Way and Enbridge Gas Distribution today launched the 2005, 2006 Winter Warmth Fund to provide financial assistance to lowincome families and individuals struggling to pay their heating bills.
The fund was initially established in Toronto during the winter of 2004, and since that time has expanded to include more communities throughout Ontario, including York Region. Resources for the annual program are contributed by Enbridge Gas Distribution, and are available to eligible Enbridge customers.
“We’re proud to partner with Enbridge Gas Distribution to make this initiative possible,” said United Way of York Region CEO, Rahul Bhardwaj.
This year, in addition to providing financial aid, the Winter Warmth program has expanded to ensure that eligible households also receive help improving the energy efficiency of their residences. As part of the program for 2005, 2006, fund recipients who are homeowners will be offered a personal visit from an energy efficiency expert who can outfit them with energy saving tools. These include a free programmable thermostat, low-flow showerheads, pipewrap and aerators for kitchen and bathrooms.
“This fall and winter rising natural gas prices will stretch home heating budgets, especially for low-income families and individuals,” said Jim Schultz, President, Enbridge Gas Distribution. “Lending a helping hand in the communities we serve is core to our values, and we’re proud to continue to support the Winter Warmth Fund.”
Last year the Winter Warmth Fund helped more than 650 households in Ontario.

Upcoming Weeks Critical to Campaign
November 23, 2005
Markham, ON: The United Way of York Region (UWYR) campaign has raised $4.1 million to date.
Rahul Bhardwaj, UWYR CEO said, “We’ve collected 57% of our $7.25 million goal. We are very appreciative of the support received to date. However, maintaining momentum over the next four weeks is absolutely critical to us reaching our goal. There are many people counting on us.”
Employee campaigns, which represent more than half of the donations raised by UWYR annually, have generally been strong so far this year. Donors who are not canvassed through employee campaigns are contacted by mail. Mr. Bhardwaj said, “The direct mail campaign typically runs a little later than employee campaigns because many people tend to leave their annual charitable giving decisions until the end of the year.”
Mr. Bhardwaj said, “We will be campaigning hard until the end of the year, however history has shown that donations tend to taper off just before the holiday season – so this time of year is actually our most critical time.”
Volunteer Campaign Cabinet Chair David Barnes, Vice President of Public Affairs and Communications, Amex Canada Inc., echoed that sentiment saying, “This is a busy time of year for everyone. Our lives are literally bulging with business, social and personal commitments. However, some people would gladly exchange their issues for ours: Families living below the poverty line; abused women searching for sanctuary for themselves and their children; isolated seniors; at-risk teenagers; families in desperate need of counselling to hold their world together. We all need to commit some time, and some money, to make sure we’re helping these people through challenging times. Donating to United Way of York Region allows you to address a host of issues in our community with one simple donation.”
UWYR supports 37 human care agencies funding over 100 critical programs that:
- Help families, youth and children in crisis;
- Support vulnerable seniors and people with special needs; and
- Break cycles of poverty and abuse.

Campaign Hits Crucial Midway Mark
November 4, 2005
Markham, ON: The United Way of York Region (UWYR) campaign has raised $2.8 million to date.
Volunteer Campaign Cabinet Chair David Barnes, Vice President of Public Affairs and Communications, Amex Canada Inc., is pleased with the campaign progress. Mr. Barnes said, “We’ve raised about 39% of our goal so far. The campaign is running at a good pace, our challenge now is to ensure it continues to gain momentum. The people who require the programs funded by United Way donations are counting on us.”
Taxation figures released by Statistics Canada in early November indicate 28% of Ontario residents reported making charitable donations to Canadian charities last year, which is 4% higher than 2003. The median donation was $290.00. According to the Statistics Canada information, Ontario residents were more generous than the national average. Overall, 24% of Canadians made charitable donations last year with a median gift of $230.
UWYR CEO Rahul Bhardwaj said, “We are very hopeful that the trend continues this year. Our challenge is to raise awareness of the human care and community building issues we face in York Region. United Way agencies are stretched to the limit trying to meet growing demand for their programs. The demand for services is outpacing available resources.”
While it is still too early to say for certain, there is no clear indication that international relief efforts in 2005 have resulted in donor fatigue. Mr. Bhardwaj said, “It is heartening to see Canadians offer support to people whose lives have been impacted by devastating natural disasters. For the most part, people understand those situations do not diminish the need here at home. We continue to be optimistic that people will not see this as an either/or situation.”
Social need in York Region is fueled by a number of factors, most of which are associated with the tremendous population growth and demographic shifts. The human services sector is challenged to respond to needs associated with an aging population, struggling youth and increasing cultural diversity.

Campaign Hits 25% Mark as dedicated volunteers take part in "Day of Caring®"
October 20, 2005
Markham, ON: United Way of York Region (UWYR) will hold its semi-annual Day of Caring on Thursday, October 27, 2005
Day of Caring is organized by United Way of York Region twice a year to match corporate volunteers with human care agencies that need help with simple building and grounds improvement projects. Day of Caring helps United Way donors see first-hand how important their support is.
UWYR Chief Executive Officer Rahul Bhardwaj said, “Social need is somewhat camouflaged in York Region, but there is no doubt we have some ‘big city’ problems to deal with here. The experience of large urban centres has shown us how quickly these problems can overtake a community. We have the power and ability to stop it, but everyone has to make a commitment to do their part.”
UWYR kicked off its 2005 campaign in late August, with the announcement of an ambitious $7.25 million goal. The campaign has raised $1.8 million to date, about 25% of the overall goal. Mr. Bhardwaj said, “We are feeling good about campaign progress to date and events such as Day of Caring really energize our volunteers and donors.”
Approximately 125 volunteers from 12 companies and organizations are involved in 16 Day of Caring projects on Thursday, October 27. In addition to the usual painting and landscaping projects, there are a couple of new ideas this year.
- HOCKEY: Ceridian employees will help a group of new Canadians learn more about hockey, a sport that instills passion in the hearts of so many Canadians. Toronto Chinese Community Services Association (TCCSA) is hosting a hockey tournament at their Markham office. TCCSA assists newcomers to adapt to the Canadian style of living, offering a variety of settlement, training and recreational programs.
- COOKING: Lexmark employees are taking part in a cooking contest at Transitional and Supportive Housing Services of York Region (TSHSYR) just north of Newmarket. While Lexmark employees are cooking meals, employees from PMA Brethour Group will be doing some interior painting at the same site. TSHSYR operates shelters for homeless men, youth and families in York Region.

August 20, 2005
Markham, ON: United Way of York Region (UWYR) is setting its sights on $7.25 million, almost 7% higher than last year.
In making the announcement Volunteer Campaign Cabinet Chair David Barnes, Vice President of Public Affairs and Communications, Amex Canada Inc., said the goal is very ambitious. He said, “We’re going to blast through the important psychological benchmark of $7 million this year. It is an absolute necessity. United Way agencies are stretched to the limit trying to meet growing demand for their programs. The United Way campaign has shown steady growth over the past number of years, but even so, demand for services has been outpacing available resources. Our campaign team is working extremely hard to bring in a landmark campaign this year.”
The record setting 2005 Campaign Goal was announced at the 2nd annual ATI Technologies Inc. Dragon Boat Festival in support of United Way of York Region, August 20, 2005. The event was an ideal way to kick off a landmark campaign. Over 1,000 people were in attendance, raising $78,000, an 8% increase over last year’s event.
UWYR CEO Rahul Bhardwaj congratulated ATI Technologies for their involvement in the Dragon Boat Festival. “As one of York Region’s largest employers, ATI has shown a very strong commitment to community. The support we receive from the company and its employees is greatly appreciated.”
Mr. Bhardwaj said public education is a key to the success of the 2005 campaign. He said, “Social need is somewhat camouflaged in York Region, but there is no doubt we have some ‘big city’ problems to deal with here. The experience of large urban centres has shown us how quickly these problems can overtake a community. We have the power and ability to stop it, but everyone has to make a commitment to do their part.”
Social need in York Region is fueled by a number of factors most of which are associated with the tremendous population growth and demographic shifts. The human services sector is challenged to respond to needs associated with an aging population, struggling youth and increasing cultural diversity.
Mr. Bhardwaj said the face of need in York Region communities is changing. Statistics show over 72,500 York Region residents are considered low income. Over 50% of those people have jobs. And over 60% have at least a high school education. “Simply put, there is an alarming increase in the number of people in our Region who struggle to provide the basic necessities for their families.”
United Way of York Region supports 37 human care agencies funding over 100 critical programs that:
- Help families, youth and children in crisis
- Support vulnerable seniors and people with special needs
- Break cycles of poverty and abuse.
Mr. Barnes said, “I am very proud to be involved with United Way of York Region. We all know how challenging life can become at times. When those challenges become overwhelming, United Way and its member agencies are there to help.”

In its 23 year history, this event has generated over $3 million for United Way. The lives of thousands of people in need have been improved immeasurably.?
As one of Canada’s fastest growing communities, York Region’s building industry is an important economic driver, providing jobs, homes and infrastructure to the community. Thank you to the following organizations and their dedicated employees:
- AT&T Global Services Canada Co.

Over $4 Million at Work in York Region Communities
April 26, 2005
Markham, ON: United Way of York Region (UWYR) announced it is distributing a record $4,011,700 for human care programs in York Region’s nine communities this year.
Mary Neal, Chair of the volunteer Fund Distribution Committee announced the organization is funding 37 member agencies in 2005/06. Mrs. Neal said, “United Way of York Region is funding over 100 critical human care programs. The funding makes a tremendous difference in the lives of thousands people every day.”
In 2005, the UWYR Board has approved the following funding:
- $786,000 for programs to help children and youth in crisis.
- $994,000 for programs that strengthen and support families in need.
- $1,260,000 for programs to assist vulnerable seniors and people with special needs.
- $775,000 for programs that break cycles of abuse and poverty.
- $197,000 for “Community Initiatives? – funding for building community services infrastructure in diverse communities including Chinese, South Asian and African-Caribbean.
UWYR also announced new funding priorities, based on an independent community needs assessment conducted in 2004. Mark Foerster, Chair of the Needs Assessment and Funding Priorities Committee said, “United Way reviews its funding priorities every five years to ensure its resources are strategically allocated. Donors count on us to ensure their money is helping those who need it the most. We take that trust very seriously.”
2004 Funding Priorities
Assist vulnerable people by building strong, vibrant, healthy communities by:
- Supporting people with mental health challenges.
- Providing services geared toward newcomers and immigrants.
- Addressing issues of affordable housing and homelessness.
- Preventing domestic violence and abuse.
- Promoting literacy.
The priorities are not ranked, but rather “clustered” according to the frequency and content of the input received. The findings are similar to the review conducted in 1998, however housing/homelessness and literacy were rated as higher priority needs in the most recent assessment. The review sought input from UWYR stakeholders and the community at large.
Since the completion of the needs assessment, UWYR has initiated a broader-based organizational review. UWYR CEO Rahul Bhardwaj said, “The needs assessment highlighted the very long list of pressing needs in York Region. We must now examine our role to determine our role in addressing those needs. It is important for United Way donors to know their support has a positive long-term impact on the health of our neighbourhoods.” Mr. Bhardwaj said the UWYR Board of Directors is reviewing the organization’s Mission and Vision statements and studying the effectiveness of its current fund distribution process.
He said, “United Way of York Region celebrates its 30th Anniversary next year. The review process will ensure we enter our next decade with focused vision, commitment and energy.”

January 27, 2005
Markham, ON: United Way of York Region (UWYR) celebrates a record-breaking fundraising campaign, raising $6,789,000 in 2004.

Campaign Cabinet Chair Garth Issett, Vice President, Financial Services Sector, IBM Global Services, Canada says United Way is an organization that everyone can support. Mr. Issett says, “It’s all about supporting human dignity. UWYR brings business, labour, government, employee groups and individuals together in a common cause of caring.”
Mr. Issett says it is notable that over half of the campaign is raised through employee campaigns in the workplace. He says, “I thank the businesses and other organizations that supported their employee’s efforts for United Way again this year. And of course, a deep sense of gratitude to the people who organized the campaigns. York Region’s communities greatly appreciate your contribution.”

Ms. Lovelock will direct a volunteer and staff team responsible for raising funds for a network of human service agencies in York Region. As a long time York resident, Ms. Lovelock has a strong understanding of the fundraising environment in the Region.
CEO Rahul K. Bhardwaj said, “This is a key role in our organization. United Way of York Region (UWYR) has announced an ambitious 2004 Campaign Goal of $6,750,000. The announcement was made this morning at the first annual ATI Technologies Inc. Dragon Boat Festival at Seneca College, King Campus.
Campaign Chair, Garth Issett describes the goal as aggressive and achievable. Mr. Issett, Vice President, Financial Services Sector, IBM Global Services, Canada, says, “Social need in York Region is sometimes difficult to see – there is a veneer of prosperity. But deep down, most of us understand how thin that veneer is. Quality of life erodes very quickly if everyone doesn’t do their part to support our community. The United Way campaign is a simple way to do that with one single donation.”
UWYR Chief Executive Officer, Rahul Bhardwaj says, “This year’s goal is over 8% higher than the 2003 goal. $6.75 million will go a long way toward reducing the dangerous gap that continues to grow in York Region. We fund 41 human service agencies and 115 programs in York Region neighbourhoods. Each one of them struggles with growing needs and increased waiting lists. As a community, we will all suffer if funding for these important programs does not increase.”
The growing need for social programs is fueled by the rapid pace of growth in York Region, coupled by changes in our demographic make up. The human service sector is challenged to respond to needs associated with an aging population, struggling youth and increasing cultural diversity.
Mr. Issett says, “Sometimes people tend to ignore social problems that don’t impact them personally – but we need to understand that building a strong healthy community can only happen if everyone steps up to the plate to help out. Social dysfunction has a ripple effect. Sooner or later, it impacts all of us.”
Mr. Issett says, “The business community, the public sector and labour organizations understand the value of a cooperative effort to build a strong and healthy community. We are proud of the relationships we have with all sectors – and are counting on them to help grow the campaign this year.
“I urge everyone to support the campaign this year, because…it takes so little to do so much.”
Donations to United Way of York Region support four priority areas:
- Breaking the cycle of poverty and abuse
- Nurturing and encouraging children and youth in crisis
- Supporting and strengthening families
- Assisting vulnerable seniors and people with special needs

Chinese Community Council Launched
August 12, 2004
United Way of York Region (UWYR) is pleased to announce the formation of a new Council to improve access to social programs for the Chinese community.
UWYR Chief Executive Officer, Rahul K. Bhardwaj says, “As one of the largest funders of social programs in York Region, it is crucial that we gain a better understanding of the needs of one our fastest growing demographic populations. Our Chinese Community Council allows us to build important bridges with the Chinese Community.”
Council Chair, Solomon Yiu says, “One of the things that attracted me to the United Way of York Region Board of Directors was the organization’s commitment to gaining a clear understanding of the Chinese community. Many Chinese, particularly those who are newly settled in Canada, do not know how to access help through the existing human care network. Similarly, social service agencies are not always able to make their programs fully accessible to Chinese people. The Chinese Community Council will establish important communications channels to bridge the gap. At the same time, United Way of York Region is an effective and efficient fundraising organization that Chinese donors must consider when they look for ways to help out.”
Mr. Bhardwaj says, “United Way funded agencies strive to deliver programs that are culturally and linguistically diverse. In fact some United Way member agencies are targeted specifically to the Chinese community. The challenge our agencies face is the rapid pace of growth – we need to clearly understand the issues, and work together with Chinese community leaders to address them.”
The 2004 United Way of York Region campaign kicks off on Saturday, August 28th with an event that has its roots in Chinese tradition. The ATI Technologies Inc. Dragon Boat Festival will be an exciting family event with Dragon Boat races, live entertainment, beach volleyball, and a children’s activities village. It takes place at the Seneca College King Campus – 13990 Dufferin Street, King City beginning at 8:45 a.m.
Mr. Bhardwaj says, “We are very pleased to be involved in the first Dragon Boat Festival to take place in York Region. We will be announcing the 2004 Campaign goal in the morning, and the fun and excitement will continue all day. It will be an amazing community event.”
United Way of York Region funds 115 human service programs and 41 member agencies in Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, King, Markham, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, & Whitchurch-Stouffville.
UNITED WAY OF YORK REGION -
At Work in Your Community
May 11, 2004
United Way of York Region (UWYR) has announced its investment of $4.1 million for human service programs in York Region’s nine municipalities. The investment is distributed among 41 UWYR member agencies, funding 127 important human service programs throughout York Region.
Rahul Bhardwaj, UWYR Chief Executive Officer, says, “We want to thank the thousands of people who invested in their community during our campaign last year. It is important for them to realize the very important difference their support makes in our communities.”
Mary Neal, Voluntary Chair of the Fund Distribution Committee, announced a 2% increase for all UWYR member agencies. In addition, two agencies received funding to expand programs and two new agencies have been added to the family of member agencies. The Centre for Information and Community Services received an additional $19,000 this year, to fund youth programming. Community Home Assistance to Seniors (CHATS) received an additional $45,000 this year, an investment in day programs for seniors.
The two new member agencies are the Alzheimer Society of York Region and the Palliative Care Network (PalCare Network) for York Region. The Alzheimer Society of York Region received $33,000 to help fund its Georgina Satellite Program. PalCare Network received $55,000 for its Pain and Symptom Management Program.
Mrs. Neal said, “The 2% across-the-board increase helps agencies offset the cost of inflation. However we recognize that it does not address the mounting need to increase services in York Region. York Region’s growing population and changing demographic is causing a sharp increase in the need for services. Unfortunately, our ability to fund human service programs is not keeping pace.”
Mr. Bhardwaj said, “Building a spirit of social entrepreneurship in York Region is challenging because of the common misconception that York Region is affluent and somehow immune to social problems. This year alone, requests for funding exceeded available resources by $2 million.”
The funding levels were announced in conjunction with UWYR’s spring – Day of Caring®. Day of Caring® is organized to match corporate volunteers with agencies that need help with simple building and grounds improvement projects. Leading the Ethnoracial Access Dialogue
April 20, 2004
United Way of York Region (UWYR) is committed to working with the full diversity of partners in the region to provide leadership, skills and resources in building a more caring, compassionate community. As part of this ongoing commitment, UWYR initiated a unique project called Leading the Ethnoracial Access Dialogue (LEAD).
LEAD was launched in 2002 to gain a better understanding of the most effective and efficient way to improve access to social services for under-served communities. To date, LEAD has focused on social needs in three specific communities: Chinese, South Asian and African Caribbean, which according to 2001 Census data, represent the largest and fastest growing ethnoracial communities in York Region. Over time, LEAD’s scope will expand to include other ethnoracial communities represented in York Region.
UWYR Board Vice Chair, Frank DelZotto, Partner BDO Dunwoody LLP, said, “Cultural diversity in York Region is growing rapidly. The cultural and economic benefits are well recognized, however we must also come to terms with the social issues that accompany rapid demographic change.”
Extensive consultations were held with stakeholders in the human care sector, as well as representatives of the three target communities. The process identified some important commonalties – representatives of all three communities indicated:
- They feel isolated and detached from the network of existing social services in York Region, including United Way, because their communities are under represented in staff and volunteers structures.
- Existing human service programs are often not linguistically accessible and culturally sensitive.
- Despite a growing awareness of the ethnoracial diversity of York Region, inappropriate assumptions are often made about the social and economic needs of individuals and ethnoracial communities.
- Ethnoracial communities battle systemic barriers that block access to employment and social programs.
The consultation process culminated with the adoption of 47 recommendations to improve cultural inclusivity within UWYR specifically and the human service sector generally. The recommendations form the basis of the LEAD Implementation Plan, a three-year strategy that serves to enhance the social service capacity among the target communities, while at the same time, helping the existing social service network become more culturally inclusive.
A key component in the Implementation Plan is the approval of $180,000 in seed funding to assist the South Asian and African Caribbean communities develop a formalized system to assist their community members to access human services.
Ranjit Kumar, UWYR Board member and Chair of the LEAD Task Force said, “The Chinese community has a well established network to share information and ensure those in need are informed about the services available to assist them. However, a similar network does not yet exist in the South Asian and African Caribbean communities meaning many people do not understand that they can reach out for help. This void was identified as an urgent funding priority.”
UWYR Chief Executive Officer, Rahul Bhardwaj said, “As we go through this process it is important to avoid creating a shadow social service system for specific communities. We will work with existing human service providers and ethnoracial communities to develop an integrated approach to social programs that truly reflect the demographic make-up of York Region communities.”
Mr. Bhardwaj said, “York Region is experiencing growing pains. There is only so much funding to go around, so it is incumbent on all of us to foster an environment of social entrepreneurship that has the agility to respond to changing needs. We believe LEAD is an important step in that process.”
The first organization to receive seed funding under LEAD is Social Services Network of York Region, a newly formed organization that provides awareness and referral services to the South Asian community. Discussions continue with leaders of the African Caribbean community to identify an appropriate use of funding.
