Companies Like Wyeth Fuel UWYR’s Optimism
Headlines of an uncertain economy did not dampen Wyeth’s spirit to give to others in need. Instead, visits to the local shelter and client stories inspired Wyeth Pharmaceuticals’ employees to raise $83,000, over 23% more than they did last year. “We understand implicitly that a time of economic uncertainty is the best time to give a bit extra. This is the time when families who are struggling to make ends meet could fall through the cracks”, said Mike Baldesarra, Treasurer, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. At United Way of York Region, we have been profoundly moved at how these individuals, companies, business leaders, and virtually everyone who has given in the past are digging deeper, trying harder and giving more than ever before to lend a helping hand. To donate, please call (905) 474-9974 ext. 242.

Local Charity Appreciates the Rigors of Funding Approval
VITA is one of United Way of York Region’s newest member agencies. Since its formation in 1991, the organization has struggled to raise all of their funding on their own. Additional support they receive from UWYR will enable them to expand day support for adults with mental illness living in the Vaughan community. VITA states that the screening process they needed to go through to receive funding was rigorous and thorough. Yet they appreciate how diligently United Way of York Region must conduct its member agency selection. United Way of York Region coordinates regular Community Needs Assessments to ensure funding is directed to the most pressing human care needs and vigorously reviews all funding applications.

A Mother in Need Finds Hope
Diane loves her life. Yet just a few years ago, she had many reasons to despair. Her world was in turmoil. Diane became a single parent and both of her sons started experiencing mental health problems. Diane was struggling financially to make ends meet and had to deal with the ongoing crises of school suspensions and therapy for her sons on her own. Under the constant strain and pressure, Diane began to doubt her abilities as a parent. She was in danger of becoming severely depressed. Through a United Way of York Region funded program, Diane found the support she and her sons needed and a promising future for them all.
