Community Challenges

People are concerned about the quality of life in our neighbourhoods. We all see the buildings rise, the subdivisions appear, the infrastructure stretch in a healthy and prosperous York Region. Less obvious, in fact – hidden, are the faces and stories behind the pace of growth. The cost of maintaining a healthy community is much lower than reclaiming neighbourhoods lost to social decay.
Our Neighbourhoods are Changing
York Region’s population is growing by over 40,000 per year.
- 40% of our population is not Canadian born (2001)
- Over 65 languages are spoken
- Our population is aging with a 400% increase in seniors projected by 2026 (66,295 in 2001 to 263,000 by 2026)
- Over 50% of the people living under the low income cut-off have jobs
The Regional Municipality of York, in partnership with United Way and other members of the Community Reference Group, has released a new series of fact sheets that provide the stories behind the numbers regarding York Region’s population.
They provide an analysis of the characteristics, opportunities and challenges of four segments of our neighbourhoods: families; low income residents; seniors; and youth.
