United Way of York Region proudly recognizes organizations and individuals who took Remarkable to a new level in 2007.

2007 Volunteer of the Year

Mary Haffey

Mary Haffey

Mary Haffey is the 2007 recipient of the Douglas E. Lear Memorial Award, presented each year to our Volunteer of the Year. Mary has been an active volunteer and inspirational leader in York Region for 20 years. She has served as Board Chair at United Way of York Region and Pathways for Children, Youth and Families, a United Way member agency. She has played an integral role in countless community initiatives and spearheaded highly successful United Way campaigns at Snap-On Tools.

The Douglas E. Lear Memorial Award is sponsored by Allstate Insurance Company of Canada in association with United Way. It is named in the memory of Doug Lear, a dedicated and tireless community volunteer and long time Allstate executive.

Student Campaign Spirit Awards

Elementary: Unionville Montessori

Unionville Montessori

Unionville Montessori organized a very successful Casual Days campaign. Students and staff contributed a dollar a month for the right to dress down – raising money and awareness.

Secondary: Holy Trinity School

Holy Trinity School

From busking to pumpkin carving contests, Holy Trinity organized a spirited campaign for students from kindergarten to grade 12. In 2007, their fundraising efforts resulted in an amazing 38% increase.

Jericho Youth Centre pulled out all stops in 2007 recording a 13% fundraising increase, providing strong support for the Toronto Buttonville Municipal Airport Open House and taking an active role in the United Way Speaker’s Bureau.

This category was just too close to call. Counterpoint Engineering and Freescale Semiconductor Canada both organized amazing first-time campaigns, with great awareness building and high employee participation rates.

Town of East Gwillimbury

Spurred on by friendly competition with other municipalities, employees at the Town of East Gwillimbury organized an energetic campaign and recorded 58% participation.

Town of Richmond Hill

Richmond Hill’s participation increased by 19% and the average gift increased by 20%.

The iTRANS campaign gets stronger and stronger each year. The company matches its employees’ contributions dollar for dollar resulting in a 28% increase in fundraising in 2007. iTRANS’ Vice President, Hilda Gan was a valued member of the 2007 Campaign Cabinet.

Strong support from Vice President and General Manager Frank Heard propelled a significant increase in ITW’s overall campaign and a 69% increase in their corporate gift. Frank was also a valued member of the 2007 United Way Campaign Cabinet.

Acklands-Grainger Inc.

Acklands-Grainger is a long time United Way supporter, but their support went over the top in 2007. A dollar for dollar corporate match on a stellar employee campaign resulted in a $20,000 increase in their corporate gift. President, Court Carruthers and General Manager National Accounts, Shaun Lewis were both valued members of the 2007 Campaign Cabinet. Court is the 2008 Campaign Cabinet Chair.

With a strong emphasis on raising awareness of how donations to United Way impact York Region neighbourhoods, this campaign recorded an amazing $80,000 increase. Commissioner of Planning and Development Services, Bryan Tuckey, is a valued member of the United Way of York Region Board of Directors.

Apotex is the largest pharmaceutical supporter of United Ways across the country – hitting the $1 million mark nationwide in 2007. Here in York Region they captured the Quantum Leap award with an impressive 82.6% campaign increase.

This Spirit Award is very significant for our network of member agencies. It is awarded to the organization that raises the most funding for the UWYR Community Fund, which funds 100 social service programs, delivered by 40 member agencies, right here in York Region. This was the second award of the year for the Regional Municipality of York. Remarkable initiative.
